We found this document in a drawer after my father's passing in
an envelope he had marked "My Fathers Papers." This
registration, two branding irons and a set of hand scales for
weighing rabbit skins was his material inheritance.
The story of the brand is entwined with the story of our family. Our
spoken family history has passed on so much yet so little of this twisting
story. This registration captures a moment in time as a reference.
The young man who registered this brand in 1924 was not to live another
5 years. Shot two months before my father’s birth, this left my father
and his siblings as orphans in the 1930s as it was not possible for them
to remain in their mother's care.
It would be safe to assume that when the 22yo Granville Crawford (my
grandfather) registered this brand of G and Spur just months after the
birth of his first child, he had dreams of owning mobs of horses and
cattle and building a future for his family.
My father, also Granville Crawford, took the brand as a legacy and precious
thread to a father he never knew. He passed it onto me.
I am proud to continue that legacy with the brand now registered to my
property Galimbang YAVEN CREEK.
Last spring we joined 450 Angus cows wearing this brand and further 180
heifers. 286 females are APR registered with Angus Australia. In 2023
the herd won Champion Commercial Herd Overall in the Adelong Show Commercial
Cattle Competition.
If there is such a thing as looking down, I reckon both my fathers before
me would be pleased at how that has turned out. It might have even exceeded
their dreams.
